"Quotas" and Attachment Size Restrictions?

Recommended Posts

Do you enable size quotas for your members? So they can only upload x amount of files/storage allotted for them? What about personal messages? Do you restrict the amount of PM's people can have?

We implement a quota over on Asperger’s Network - per post. It’s so you don’t end up with a thread with millions of images that takes a year to load on 3G.

You joke but in certain scenarios I've recently found 3G to be faster than 4G somehow.

I don't know how it's technically possible though.

Probably faster than this whole "5G" thing. 😛

Phones have been known to jump back to 3G - particularly in rural areas.

I allow up to 50MB for attachment quota. If a user tries to upload more, the system won't let allow the member to post. If they want to create a post that is going to benefit the community & appeal, I can over ride this setting for my forum.

I have implemented attachment limits to increase with the promotion system on my site.

How does limiting the attachment sizes increase the promotion system?

What's the point in having a quota or attachment size restrictions, if a webmaster has unlimited bandwidth and hosting? Should I start selling account upgrades which offer a higher limitation?  I'm currently not on a unlimited plan!

Because your members don’t. I do an exceptional amount of browsing from my phone with varying levels of cellular data. Allowing people to upload three hundred images at a time slows loading of threads down and detracts from the user experience. As a webmaster, you’re ostensibly responsible for that.

We're more or less the same 🙂
